Beaches, Safari and Culture in Sri Lanka
Dreaming of a trip full of contrasts? Then you should definitely consider Sri Lanka as your next destination! One day you’re soaking up the sun on beautiful beaches and surfing the waves, the next you’re on a safari spotting elephants or exploring tea plantations in the hills. This itinerary suits both curious explorers and laid-back travellers – and of course, it can be tailored to fit your preferences.
5 nights in Mirissa – beach life and whales
The journey begins in the charming coastal town of Mirissa, about 2 hours and 45 minutes from Colombo Airport. Mirissa is known for its laid-back vibe and stunning crescent-shaped beach. It’s the perfect place to relax with a fresh coconut in hand – but there’s also plenty to do.
Activity suggestions:
- Go on a whale-watching tour (season: Dec–Apr)
- Try out surfing
- Take a day trip to Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
- Enjoy fresh seafood dinners on the beach at sunset
Looking for more buzz? Try Unawatuna or Hikkaduwa – with more beach bars, clubs and nightlife.
Want better surf? Head to Ahangama or Weligama, where you’ll find more surf schools and consistent waves year-round.
1 night in Udawalawe – safari with elephants
From the coast, you’ll travel inland to Udawalawe. Wondering why we spend a night here? Because this is where a real adventure awaits: a jeep safari in the national park, with chances to spot elephants, buffalo, eagles – and maybe even leopards.
Udawalawe is the second most visited national park in Sri Lanka, just after Yala.
- Udawalawe: Calm, accessible, and known for elephants. Great for a shorter safari between the coast and the highlands.
- Yala: More jungle-like, higher chance of spotting leopards and other predators. Ideal if you want to dedicate more time to safari and dramatic nature.
Prefer Yala? You can swap your stay in Udawalawe for Tissamaharama, which is the best base for Yala safaris.
Note: Safari is not automatically included – don’t forget to add it to your booking (additional cost applies).
4 nights in Ella – mountain air and greenery
Now we leave the heat behind and head up into a completely different world. High in the hills lies the small town of Ella, surrounded by tea plantations, waterfalls, and lush nature. The cooler air and slower pace make Ella perfect for both relaxation and outdoor adventures.
Activity suggestions:
- Hike Little Adam’s Peak or Ella Rock for amazing views
- Visit the famous Nine Arches Bridge
- Explore tea plantations and factories – don’t miss a guided tour with tasting!
Bonus tip: the train ride from Ella to Kandy
Want to experience one of the world’s most scenic train journeys? The route between Ella and Kandy winds through tea estates, mountains and jungle, offering breathtaking views. The train is not included in this package, but we recommend pre-booking seats, especially in 1st or 2nd class – they sell out quickly. The journey is long (and slow!) but unforgettable. If you prefer, you can always travel by car instead.
2 nights in Kandy – the cultural heart
After the calm of Ella, it’s time for a bit of city life. Kandy is a cultural gem, nestled by a lake and surrounded by green hills. It’s home to the Temple of the Tooth, one of Buddhism’s most sacred sites.
Activity suggestions:
- Visit the Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa)
- Watch a traditional Kandyan dance performance
- Wander through the botanical gardens in Peradeniya
- Explore local markets and cafés
1 night in Sigiriya – the Lion Rock and ancient ruins
Next stop: Sigiriya, where you can climb the mighty Lion Rock – an ancient fortress with sweeping views over the jungle. For even better views, consider climbing Pidurangala Rock, just across from Lion Rock. It gets hot in Sigiriya, so we recommend booking a hotel with a pool to cool off after your adventures.
More ideas in the area:
- Go cycling through the peaceful countryside
- Visit the ancient cities of Polonnaruwa or Anuradhapura
1 night in Negombo – a relaxed beach ending
Your final night is spent in Negombo, a coastal town close to the airport. Here you can unwind with a stroll along the beach, enjoy a good dinner or stock up on local spices before flying out from Colombo.
Getting around Sri Lanka
Getting around Sri Lanka is simple – and part of the experience! For short distances, tuk-tuks are a fun and easy option. For longer journeys, most travellers choose a private car with a driver, which is a comfortable and affordable way to explore the country. Bonus: your driver often doubles as a local guide. You can also rent a car and drive yourself, giving you more flexibility to stop at hidden gems along the way.
A package tour and a linked arrangement offer travellers different booking processes but provide the same protection under the Package Travel Act, ensuring customer rights and peace of mind during the trip.
